Overview
Griseofulvin 125mg Tablets 100's contain griseofulvin, an oral antifungal medicine used to treat dermatophyte infections. Dermatophytes are fungi that affect keratin-containing tissues, including the skin, scalp, hair and nails. Treatment is generally considered when topical therapy is unsuitable or has not been effective, depending on the infection.
Mechanism of Action: How It Works
Griseofulvin interferes with fungal cell division by disrupting the formation of the structures fungi need to divide. It also accumulates in newly forming keratin, making new skin, hair and nails more resistant to invasion by susceptible fungi. As infected tissue grows out and is replaced by healthy tissue, the infection gradually clears. This is why treatment can take several weeks or longer.
Uses and Benefits
Griseofulvin may be prescribed for selected fungal infections, including:
Scalp ringworm (tinea capitis): a fungal infection of the scalp and hair.
Ringworm of the body (tinea corporis): circular or scaly fungal skin lesions.
Certain fungal infections of the feet or groin: where griseofulvin is considered appropriate.
Fungal nail infections: in selected cases, although treatment may be prolonged and other antifungals may be preferred.
Griseofulvin does not treat bacterial infections, viral infections or every type of fungal infection. The diagnosis should be confirmed by a healthcare professional.
