Terbinafine is an antifungal medicine belonging to the allylamine class. It is used to treat a variety of fungal infections affecting the skin and, in certain formulations, the nails and other tissues.

How terbinafine works

Terbinafine inhibits an enzyme called squalene epoxidase, which is involved in the production of ergosterol, an essential component of the fungal cell membrane.

Blocking this enzyme causes ergosterol deficiency and accumulation of squalene within fungal cells. This damages the fungal cell membrane and can result in the death of susceptible fungi.

Terbinafine therefore acts directly against the fungus rather than simply relieving symptoms such as itching or redness.

Uses and indications

Depending on the formulation, terbinafine may be used for:

  • Athlete's foot (tinea pedis)
  • Ringworm of the body (tinea corporis)
  • Jock itch (tinea cruris)
  • Certain other dermatophyte skin infections
  • Fungal infections of the nails, particularly when oral treatment is prescribed.

PRECAUTIONS & WARNINGS

  • Confirm the fungal infection where diagnosis is uncertain.
  • Do not use if allergic to terbinafine or any product ingredient.
  • Oral terbinafine requires particular caution in patients with liver disease.
  • Tell your healthcare professional about all other medicines you take.
  • Topical terbinafine is for external use only.

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding patients should seek professional advice before use.
  • Seek medical attention for symptoms of liver injury during oral treatment.
