Microgynon 30 Tablets 21s are a combined oral contraceptive used primarily for the prevention of pregnancy. Each beige tablet contains levonorgestrel 150 micrograms and ethinylestradiol 30 micrograms, providing both a progestogen and an oestrogen component. The product is supplied as a 21-tablet pack.
Microgynon 30 is a 21-day combined contraceptive pill. One tablet is taken every day for 21 consecutive days, followed by a 7-day tablet-free interval. A withdrawal bleed usually occurs during this tablet-free period. After the 7-day interval, the next pack should be started on the appropriate day.
How does Microgynon 30 work?
Microgynon 30 contains two active hormones:
Levonorgestrel 150 micrograms is a progestogen that contributes to contraceptive effectiveness.
Ethinylestradiol 30 micrograms is an oestrogen that works together with levonorgestrel to suppress ovulation.
The contraceptive effect occurs through several mechanisms. Microgynon 30 primarily prevents the release of an egg from the ovary by suppressing the hormonal changes responsible for ovulation. It also thickens cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to pass through the cervix, and produces changes in the lining of the uterus.
