Cotrimoxazole Tablets 480mg are a combination antibacterial medicine containing sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. The combination is also known as co-trimoxazole and is used to treat selected infections caused by susceptible bacteria and certain other microorganisms.
How It Works
Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim inhibit two different steps in the folate-production pathway used by susceptible microorganisms. Folate is essential for making DNA and supporting cell growth. By blocking this pathway at two points, cotrimoxazole interferes with microbial DNA synthesis and multiplication, helping control the infection.
Uses and Indications
Certain urinary tract infections.
Selected respiratory tract infections caused by susceptible bacteria.
Treatment or prevention of Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia in appropriate patients.
Selected cases of toxoplasmosis and nocardiosis under specialist guidance.
