Metronidazole Tablets 200mg are prescription antimicrobial medicines belonging to the nitroimidazole class. They are used to treat selected infections caused by anaerobic bacteria and certain protozoa.
How It Works
Metronidazole enters susceptible microorganisms and is chemically activated under low-oxygen conditions. Its active metabolites damage microbial DNA and interfere with DNA synthesis, leading to the death of susceptible anaerobic bacteria and protozoa.
Uses and Indications
Metronidazole may be prescribed for:
Amoebiasis, an infection caused by Entamoeba histolytica.
Giardiasis, caused by Giardia duodenalis.
Trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted protozoal infection.
Bacterial vaginosis, when indicated.
Selected infections caused by anaerobic bacteria, including certain dental, abdominal and pelvic infections.
It does not treat viral infections such as colds and flu, and it is not effective against every type of bacteria or intestinal parasite.
Precautions and Warnings
Avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least 48 hours afterwards.
Inform your healthcare professional about other medicines, particularly warfarin and lithium.
Seek advice if you have liver or neurological conditions.
Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only with professional guidance.
Metronidazole does not treat viral infections
