What is Meloxicam?
Meloxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to manage pain and inflammation associated with certain musculoskeletal and joint conditions. It belongs to the oxicam group of NSAIDs and is available in several formulations and strengths.
Meloxicam works primarily by reducing the production of prostaglandins, substances involved in pain, inflammation and fever. It inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, with greater inhibition of COX-2 than COX-1 at therapeutic doses.
What is Meloxicam used for?
Meloxicam is primarily used to relieve symptoms associated with inflammatory and degenerative joint conditions, particularly:
- Osteoarthritis
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Pain, swelling and stiffness associated with inflammatory joint conditions
It helps reduce symptoms but does not cure the underlying degenerative or autoimmune disease.
How does Meloxicam work?
Inflammation and pain involve the production of prostaglandins through the cyclooxygenase pathway. Meloxicam inhibits COX enzymes, reducing prostaglandin formation. This helps decrease pain, inflammation and joint stiffness.
PRECAUTIONS & WARNINGS
Do not use without medical advice if you:
- Have had an allergic reaction to meloxicam, aspirin or other NSAIDs.
- Have a history of NSAID-induced asthma or severe allergic reactions.
- Have an active stomach or intestinal ulcer or gastrointestinal bleeding.
- Have significant kidney or liver disease.
- Have heart disease or significant cardiovascular risk factors.
- Are taking anticoagulants, antiplatelet medicines, corticosteroids, certain blood-pressure medicines or other NSAIDs.
Pregnancy: Meloxicam should be avoided in the third trimester and should only be used earlier in pregnancy when specifically recommended by a healthcare professional.
Breastfeeding: Consult a healthcare professional before use.
Important interaction: Do not routinely combine meloxicam with other NSAIDs, as this can increase the risk of stomach bleeding, kidney problems and other adverse effects.
COMMON SIDE EFFECTS
Common or relatively frequent side effects can include:
- Indigestion
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhoea
- Headache

Serious reactions requiring urgent medical attention include gastrointestinal bleeding, severe allergic reactions, severe skin reactions, chest pain, breathing difficulties, sudden weakness, or signs of kidney problems such as markedly reduced urine output
