Medi-Keel A Honey and Lemon Throat Lozenges 16’s are medicated throat lozenges formulated to provide symptomatic relief of sore throat. Each lozenge contains benzocaine 12 mg and cetylpyridinium chloride 1.5 mg. The honey and lemon flavour provides a pleasant taste while the active ingredients provide local anaesthetic and antiseptic effects.
How Medi-Keel A works
Benzocaine is a mild local anaesthetic. When the lozenge dissolves slowly in the mouth, benzocaine acts locally on the mucous membranes and helps reduce the sensation of pain by temporarily numbing the affected area.
Cetylpyridinium chloride is a quaternary ammonium antiseptic with antibacterial and antifungal properties. It acts locally in the mouth and throat and helps inhibit the growth of susceptible microorganisms. Some microorganisms may be resistant to its action.
Together, these ingredients provide local anaesthetic and antiseptic action for symptomatic management of sore throat.
Uses and indications
Medi-Keel A Honey and Lemon Throat Lozenges are indicated for the symptomatic relief of sore throat.
A sore throat can have different causes, including viral infections, bacterial infections, allergies and irritation. Medi-Keel A is intended to relieve the throat symptoms and should not be considered a treatment for every underlying cause of sore throat.
If the sore throat is severe, accompanied by fever, headache, nausea or vomiting, or persists for more than two days, the product information recommends consulting a doctor.
Precautions and warnings
Do not use Medi-Keel A if you are hypersensitive or allergic to benzocaine, cetylpyridinium chloride or any of the other ingredients.
Benzocaine is contraindicated in people with low plasma cholinesterase concentrations or those receiving anticholinesterase medicines.
Because benzocaine produces local numbness, some temporary numbness of the tongue or surrounding mouth tissues may occur. Avoid eating or drinking very hot substances while the throat or mouth remains significantly numb.
Excessive exposure to benzocaine can cause systemic toxicity. Symptoms may include dizziness, nausea, vomiting, tremors, convulsions, breathing difficulties and cardiovascular effects. Excessive use should therefore be avoided.
COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

- Temporary numbness of the tongue or mouth.
- Local irritation.
- Hypersensitivity or allergic reactions.
With excessive use or systemic absorption of benzocaine: dizziness, nausea, vomiting, tremors, convulsions, breathing difficulties, hypotension and abnormal heart rhythms may occur. These require urgent medical attention.
