What is Pylotrip Kit 14’s?
Pylotrip Kit 14’s is a combination treatment used for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), a bacterium associated with chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer disease.
The kit contains three medicines:
- Lansoprazole 30mg – a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces stomach acid production.
- Amoxicillin 1g – a penicillin antibiotic that acts against susceptible bacteria.
- Clarithromycin 500mg – a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein production.
What is H. pylori?
Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that can colonise the stomach lining. Infection can contribute to chronic gastritis and peptic ulcers affecting the stomach or duodenum.
Eradicating H. pylori is important in appropriate patients because successful treatment can help resolve the infection and reduce the risk of recurrent H. pylori-associated ulcer disease.
How does Pylotrip work?
The three components have complementary roles.
Amoxicillin is an antibiotic that interferes with bacterial cell-wall formation, helping eliminate susceptible H. pylori organisms.
Clarithromycin is another antibiotic that interferes with bacterial protein production, providing a second antibacterial mechanism against H. pylori.
Lansoprazole reduces the production of gastric acid. Lowering stomach acidity helps create conditions that support antibiotic activity and also assists healing of acid-related damage to the stomach and duodenal lining.
The combination is therefore designed to attack H. pylori while simultaneously reducing gastric acid.
Important antibiotic warning
Pylotrip contains amoxicillin and clarithromycin. It should not be used by someone with a known serious allergy to penicillin/amoxicillin or a previous serious reaction to clarithromycin or related macrolide antibiotics.
Common side effects
Possible side effects from this combination include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Abdominal discomfort
- Headache
- Changes in taste or a metallic taste
- Indigestion
Antibiotic-associated diarrhoea can occur. Severe, persistent or bloody diarrhoea requires medical attention, as it may indicate a more serious antibiotic-associated intestinal infection.
Seek urgent medical attention for symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing, facial or throat swelling or severe widespread rash.
