Osmolax Solution 200ml contains lactulose 3.4 g/5 ml, an osmotic laxative used to relieve constipation. It is an oral solution that works mainly within the large intestine, where lactulose is broken down by naturally occurring bacteria. This produces an osmotic effect that increases the amount of water in the bowel, helping soften stools and make bowel movements easier.
How Osmolax works
Lactulose is a synthetic sugar that is minimally absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It reaches the colon largely unchanged, where bacteria break it down into organic acids. This increases the osmotic pressure within the bowel and draws water into the intestinal contents. The resulting softer stool can help promote bowel movement and relieve constipation.
Uses and indications
Osmolax is primarily used for:
- Relief of constipation
- Softening hard stools when appropriate.
