Overview
Nystatin Oral Drops 30 mL is an antifungal medicine used to treat oral thrush, an infection of the mouth caused by the overgrowth of Candida yeast. Oral thrush can affect infants, children and adults, although it is particularly common in babies and may also occur in people using inhaled corticosteroids, taking certain medicines or experiencing reduced immunity.
The drops provide a liquid formulation that can be useful for treating fungal infections affecting the oral cavity. Nystatin acts mainly at the site where it is applied and is minimally absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract when taken orally. This makes it suitable for certain superficial fungal infections, but it does not treat systemic fungal infections.
How it works.
The active ingredient is nystatin, an antifungal medicine. It is active against susceptible yeasts, including Candida species, which commonly cause oral thrush.
Nystatin binds to ergosterol in the fungal cell membrane, disrupting the membrane's integrity and causing leakage of cellular contents. This damages the fungal cells and helps control the infection.
Nystatin is not an antibiotic for bacterial infections and should not be used to treat mouth ulcers or white patches unless a healthcare professional has established that a fungal infection is responsible.
