Emjard (Empagliflozin) is an oral prescription medicine containing empagliflozin, an SGLT2 (sodium-glucose co-transporter 2) inhibitor. It is used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus and is also used in appropriate adults with heart failure.
How does empagliflozin work?
Empagliflozin blocks the SGLT2 transporter in the proximal renal tubules.
This causes:
- Reduced reabsorption of filtered glucose.
- Increased glucose excretion through urine.
- Reduced blood glucose levels.
- Increased urinary sodium and water excretion.
The additional loss of glucose and sodium can also contribute to reductions in blood pressure and fluid volume, which is relevant to some patients with heart failure
USES / INDICATIONS
Emjard (empagliflozin) may be prescribed for:
- Type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve glycaemic control alongside diet and exercise
- Reduction of cardiovascular death in appropriate adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease
